A heuristic technique (/hjᵿˈrɪstᵻk/; Ancient Greek: εὑρίσκω, "find" or "discover"), often called simply a heuristic, is any approach to problem solving, learning, or discovery that employs a practical method not guaranteed to be optimal or perfect, but sufficient for the immediate goals. - from Wikipedia (I know, I know, so sue me...)
I wanted a blog name that would reflect my dedication to heraldry, my love of words, and my wish to engage in both learning myself and teaching others in the SCA. The term "heuristic" seems to fit the bill, and it alliterates nicely with "herald", to boot. Hence, the name.
This will be my place to put information for myself and others, to share what I've learned, to ask for help with things I'm studying, and to sing the praises of my Barony and my Kingdom. All these things are, in my opinion, the right thing for any herald to be involved with. Being the over-achiever I am, I'm involved in all of them, but that's a horse of a different color.
There will be entries on costuming and clothing creation, and the research that accompanies that (though I'll freely admit that, when it comes to garb, I use other people's research and call it close enough). I will write about all the various aspects of heraldry, as I research and discover them. I will post information on Vikings, in all their different flavors and colors, because I find them incredibly fascinating. I'll write about the SCA in general, documenting where I'm coming from, and where I'm going to.
So, dear readers, rejoice! My next few projects include making the wood frame for my newly purchased Viking tent, and creating a wimple, veil, and scapular for Sister Agnes' garb for the NHRF. Wish me luck!
